Council Tax: How much does Sadiq Khan cost you?
Updated: Feb 13, 2021
As the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan taxes you to fund the Greater London Authority. The Mayor's tax rate is part of your council tax bill.
Khan can choose to cut the mayoral tax, freeze it or increase it.
In his manifesto, he told Londoners: "My promise is to keep council tax as low as possible."
So how much does Sadiq Khan cost you? Sadiq Khan has put your taxes up every year since 2016, breaking his promise to keep your council tax as low as possible.
The Mayor's latest tax rise will increase his share of your council tax bill by 9.5%.
This means that Londoners living in a Band D property will be paying Khan a whopping £363.66 on top of their local council's tax rate.
What did Boris Johnson as Mayor cost you?
That's nearly £90 more than Boris Johnson's mayoralty cost you.
As Mayor, Boris Johnson froze his share of your council tax bill between 2008-12 and cut it by 10% between 2012-16.
By the end of Boris Johnson's two terms as Mayor, Londoners living in a Band D property only paid £276 to the Greater London Authority.
Why does Sadiq Khan cost you more?
Labour Mayors cost more. In office, both Ken Livingstone and Sadiq Khan put our city's taxes up every single year. In total, London's Labour Mayors will have put our city's taxes up by 195%.
Sadiq Khan is misleading Londoners by claiming he has no alternative but to but to tax you more. Since 2016, he has chosen to make Londoners pay more instead of cutting waste, bureaucracy and spin at City Hall.
