We want to see the Mayor of London build more homes for Londoners that are affordable, fit for families and that will reduce overcrowding in our city.
The government has given the Mayor of London £4.82 billion to build 116,000 affordable homes by April 2022. Sadiq Khan himself said that this was an “unprecedented” amount, but he has so far failed to hold up his end of the bargain.
In the last three years, Sadiq has only started just over 34,515 homes leaving more than 80,000 to be built by 2022. The Mayor is failing to deliver the homes London needs and yet continues to ask for more money. We believe the Mayor needs to focus on delivering the homes he’s promised, rather than calling for more money.
Homes Fit For Families
The Mayor’s current housing strategy has no target for affordable family-sized homes, abandoning the previous 36% target to build homes of three bedrooms or more.
We believe that the Mayor was wrong to abandon this target and that families will pay the price in London. Sadiq Khan should rethink this policy, bring back the target to ensure that families in London aren’t barred from affordable housing.
This policy will make overcrowding worse in London. Some 360,000 children under 16 already live in overcrowded homes in our city. The Mayor will only make this worse as he continues to prioritise one or two-bedroom homes over ones fit for families.
In February 2018, the London Assembly passed a motion calling for family homes targets to be restored. However, instead of listening, Sadiq Khan has doubled down on his plan to build smaller homes.

The London Plan
The London Plan is the strategic development plan for London which sets out how the city will grow for the next two decades. As Mayor, Sadiq Khan is drafting a new London Plan that will damage London’s suburbs in a desperate attempt to build more homes.
The Mayor is planning to:
We believe that the Mayor’s draft London Plan demonstrates his failure to build enough homes as he is desperate for “solutions". We are calling on the Mayor to rethink his strategy to protect London’s suburbs and bring back the targets for family homes.
The Mayor is planning to:
- Remove protection for back gardens from development in a move that would damage London’s green spaces and biodiversity.
- Abandon the target for family-sized homes and prevent London Boroughs from setting one which would increase the level of overcrowding in London.
- Scrap density limits that limited the pressure on public services and transport. This will likely result in boroughs approving denser, taller developments.
- Ban new car parking spaces which will undermine local support for new homes and the rollout of electric vehicles, as people will not be able to charge them at home.
