I welcome the news that Andrew Travers has left his post following the gross incompetence witnessed at Barnet’s election shambles last week. The way in which thousands of people were disenfranchised was nothing short of disgraceful but I am glad to see he has done the decent thing and fallen on his sword. I’m calling for a cross-party investigation into the fiasco and I will be raising this as a motion at the Assembly’s first AGM on Friday.

London Labour are full of empty rhetoric and devoid of any solutions

It is shameful that after 8 years of sniping and criticising Boris Johnson and the Conservative administration, the Labour Group have absolutely no alternative policies to put forward. This shows that London Labour are full of empty rhetoric and completely devoid of any solution to make Londoners lives better. Both Labour assembly members and the Mayoral candidate Sadiq Kahn lack the courage to come clean with the public. With the election imminent, could it be that they don't want to admit to putting up tax, are in a muddle on fares policy and are clueless on police? If they cannot get their act together at this crucial time, they are not capable of running London

Response to TfL private hire consultation

It’s positive that the most impractical suggestions from the initial consultation have been ruled out. However I still have significant concerns about some of the proposals that TfL now wish to take forward. For example I am unconvinced that TfL should be able to control advertising on private hire vehicles and I would not like to see the advance of ridesharing undermined. There will be a fresh consultation on removing the exemption from private hire vehicles on driving into the Congestion Charge Zone and I am not in favour of a proposal that will increase fares and reduce choice for Londoners.

Challenging the Mayor on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in London

Recent data showed that London accounts for more than half the number of FGM cases nationwide, with 758 new incidents last summer alone. FGM is a practice that would seem out of place in the dark ages, and yet it is being inflicted on young people living in our city today. We should be ashamed. Teachers, social workers and medical professionals all have a role to play in being alert to the signs so they can help identify young girls at risk before it is too late.

The Mayor of London also needs to work with the Metropolitan Police and come up a swift and effective solution that will enable more prosecutions and move towards eradicating this inhumane practice. I will be challenging Boris Johnson on this subject at the upcoming Mayor’s Question Time. A joined-up approach could mean more young girls are saved from suffering abuse. We owe it to them to come up with results.”

UBER: We need these popular app services to thrive

The Uber app is not a taxi meter and the High Court has made the right call. But, TfL bosses need to make sure that the proposed measures in their own consultation do not stifle innovation. We need these hugely popular app based services to thrive. The consumer would be best served by light-touch, common sense regulation. I urge the Capital’s businesses and workers to respond to TfL’s consultation to make sure the consumer’s voice is heard.

Sir Howard’s fudged answers on night flights give Heathrow scope to ignore bits of the report they don’t like

Sir Howard Davies' report calls for a third runway at Heathrow to be mitigated by 13 measures such as banning night flights to a noise limit. Today, I asked him whether he'd still back the third runway if these conditions were not met. Unfortunately, he seemed to fudge his answers when it came to night flights, suggesting some measures are absolute requirements and others would be nice. This gives Heathrow ample scope to ignore the bits of the report they don't like. A third runway would be a huge mistake for London. Sir Howard needs to come clean on which parts of his report are absolute requirements. I'd like a point-by-point explanation.

Unions have won, Londoners have lost

The unions have won and Londoners have lost. The delay of the night tube is a clear sign that transport unions are a barrier to progress. Their limitless self-interest has blocked something Londoners were clearly in favour of and put a halt to economic growth.

Sound cannon could be the water cannon alternative London needs

The Home Secretary has made the wrong decision in not allowing the Metropolitan Police the use of water cannon. Not only are water cannon a better alternative to rubber bullets, they act as a powerful visual deterrent to violence.

Another crowd control alternative is now required and I suggest the Met adopt Sound Cannon. They are low cost, safe, extremely mobile, and would be very effective at dispersing a riot or violent demonstrations. Though I hope another riot never happens we must be prepared to protect Londoners against all eventualities.

The unions hate that the transport system is evolving

They’re against driverless trains, they’re against turning dead ticket offices into thriving retail units, now they’re against the night tube. The unions hate that the transport system is evolving and they oppose every money saving or revenue raising idea; ideas which would help lower fares and improve journeys for Londoners. This lot, with their anti-progressive attitudes, are only fast tracking their way to extinction.
