Merton and Wandsworth’s GLA member, Richard Tracey today took an inaugural ride on London’s first cable car across the Thames (Emirates Air line Cable Car) and used the river to travel there.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Tracey said:

“The cable car from Greenwich is an excellent idea for linking to Excel conference and exhibition centre on the north bank.

“London has seen a huge proliferation in its transport choices since Boris became Mayor in 2008 and to prove that there are viable ways to travel across town without taking the Tube, bus or train, I decided to hop onboard the Thames Clipper services, which extends to Putney later this year, down to Greenwich.

“It was a very smooth, pleasant and stress-free journey. And it shows the benefits of expanding our transport options.

“So in a few short years we’ve gone from relying entirely on train, bus and Tube to deciding whether we’d prefer to use the river; DLR; orbital London Overground; tram or of course Boris bikes. And now we have the cable car. All of these services have been astounding successes and grown considerably from their original size. I am confident that the cable car will become an integral part of London’s transport network.”
